Brighton’s own Boogaloo Stu kicked off the Fringe in style with his riotous Big Quiffy Bingo, where we were smacked between the eyes with his signature style of bawdy humour, infectious energy and an array of bonus prizes.
Selling out the WundaBarn, the main venue at this year’s temporary and very gorgeous SpiegelGardens, the audience were hanging on to every silly, filthy word Stu uttered over the hour of utter camp madness.
To say he has an electric presence would be an understatement. Strutting onto the stage in his diamond-encrusted platform boots, tight purple paisley catsuit, and enormous purple quiff, whilst singing his theme song (which consists of very rude words about body parts), he’s easy to pick out in a crowd and impossible to forget. It’s a fast-paced show, where Stu never misses a beat – or fails to insert a genitalia reference. Almost every move he made was hysterical: just one of the high points was watching his tight buns of steel grasp a coin while he made an entire lap of the stage.
It’s billed as a game of bingo, but it’s so much more than that. Think stories of Harry Styles’ preferred method to heat water, suggestions of how to use Twix chocolate bars and boundless uplifting audience participation for starters. Stu creates a warm energy, bringing his audience along for the ride with ease. People catwalked, flashmobbed and shared stories that were hilariously drawn out by Stu, but there was zero humiliation.
We left grinning from ear to ear, having made friends with the rest of the front row – that’s the kind of energy Boogaloo Stu creates. So grab yourself a slice of Boogaloo Stu magic, you won’t regret it!
