Brighton & Hove City Council has unveiled a new Seafront Prospectus, setting out a vision for the future of the city's waterfront and inviting investors, developers and cultural organisations to help bring it to life. The Argus has reported that the council is understood to be in talks with a major London gallery about the site. That idea has proved popular with many commenters, with several arguing that a significant gallery could help transform the eastern seafront and draw visitors beyond the city centre. While many residents welcomed the prospect of a major gallery at Black Rock, others focused on the wider scale of development proposed across the seafront, including plans for around 1,000 homes at Brighton Marina and at least 400 homes at the King Alfred site. Reactions on local Facebook groups and in the comments sections of news reports about the prospectus were otherwise broadly supportive of investment in the seafront, but several people questioned whether large-scale regeneration should be the priority at all, pointing instead to the everyday state of the city. Complaints about litter, dirty pavements and maintenance featured heavily in local discussions, with some residents arguing that keeping the streets clean should come before ambitious redevelopment plans. Others were more sceptical about the prospectus itself, pointing to decades of regeneration plans and consultations that have failed to materialise. Several commenters on The Argus' article questioned whether the latest vision would ultimately result in meaningful change. Of course, the prospectus is exactly that – a prospectus. It isn't a planning application and most of the projects remain some way from becoming reality. Instead, it's a vision document designed to attract investment and demonstrate what the city hopes its waterfront could become. Whether that future includes a landmark gallery, a transformed Black Rock or a reimagined city waterfront remains to be seen.
