If your intentions for 2020 included being more mindful of fast fashion when you're shopping for your latest look, then we've got an event to add to your diary next month. Re-Skill, Re-Use, Re-Fashion is coming to the Open Market on Saturday 28th March and it's your chance to discover what to do with your old clothes, saying goodbye to fast fashion and hello to a new (to you) wardrobe. With 300,000 tons of clothing going to landfill in the UK each year, that's a lot of fashion potential wasted, so the team at community group Sew Fabulous have created an event to bring a bunch of handy workshops to the people of Brighton. The line up they've curated includes everything from expert speakers to an upcycling challenge and everything in between. You can expect to hear from The Textile Review, a Brighton based textile repurposing project that is leading a huge (and much needed) change in the events industry by reclaiming fabric and reselling it or hiring it for future events. Founder Katie Briggs will be presenting a full exploration of the issue with Textile Waste, along with some great opportunities and solutions to tackle it, in addition to what she's already doing herself. They will also be teaming up with Circular Brighton & Hove to create an interactive stand to help the local community get clued up on the impact of textile waste. And that's just one of the amazing additions to the day's line up. Local textile artists, designers and makers will be leading workshops on mending, altering and up-cycling your clothes, so bring some pieces along that need a little bit of joy injected into them and get involved. If you're feeling creative and fancy showing off your up-cycling skills then you can take part in The Up-cycling Challenge on the day and transform old clothes using their machines. There are prizes for the best creations too, so get thinking. Now is a good time to have a wardrobe de-clutter as you get ready for spring, so make sure you bring all your pre-loved clothes to swap for tokens to 'spend' on other people's garms between 1.30pm and 4.00pm as they open their clothes swap. Also on the scedule, they've got Soex Textile Recycling sharing what happens to your donated clothing and textiles, and you'll hear from community groups who have benefited from your donations, as well as Gladrags Community Costume Resource and Super Looper too. Stick around until 4.00pm and you'll catch Professor of sustainable fashion, Sandy Black, talk all things fashion and sustainability. What a line up - make sure you register for a free ticket.
