what to do this weekend: 2nd – 4th November

Halloween may be over, but as soon as one seasonal celebration ends, another is just about to start, as bonfire night is right around the corner. OH YES. We’ve already told you about the amazing Brighton Illustration Fair that’s back this weekend, but if you’re still looking for things to do, here’s our Brighton weekend guide with some of the best things for you to discover…

Chop ’til you drop
We’ve mentioned PorkChops before and we’re not afraid to say it again, because he’s one of our favourite paper-crafters (official title, we promise) and he just so happens to live in Brighton. He’s back with the first of a few Christmas paper-cutting workshops this Saturday, giving you the chance to learn how to paper-cut from the best (in our opinion). Festive feels are guaranteed as he’ll be whacking out the festive tunes if you can handle it, while you make a range of handmade gifts, Christmas cards and decorations to get you into festive gear. There are only seven weeks until the big day, after all… so now is a good time to start making as you mean to go on. The workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced paper-cutters alike and you don’t have to bring a single thing, apart from a packed lunch! He’s even got some festive treats to enjoy while you work.

Skating into a new week like…
If fireworks aren’t your thing but you feel like being outdoors, then how about a Sunday evening skate? You guessed it, the ice rink is back at the Pavilion Gardens and the first skate is happening on Saturday. A feast for your eyes, Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Ice Rink could well be the lushest of all ice rinks in the south, don’t you think? It’s back until mid-Jan and the twinkly, child-friendly pop-up is the perfect entertainment spot. So grab your penguin aid and get back on the ice. Or shimmy over to their rinkside bar and restaurant and work your way through the menu – from marshmallow-topped hot chocolate to mulled wine, they’ve got the lot.
Sunday 3rd November – Sunday 13th January, various times; child £9.50, student £11, adult £14
Royal Pavilion Gardens, Brighton BN2 1RA

In need of some oooohs and some aaaaahs? Then lucky you, because it’s Guy Fawkes weekend and there are plenty of places to see the Sussex skies light up. Head over to Hove Cricket Ground on Saturday, as they’ve teamed up with Capital FM Brighton to host a pretty extravagant display! They’ve got live music from local artist Adam Davis and crowd-pleasers The Marching Skaletons. There will be food and drink to warm you up too…
Saturday 3rd November, gates 6.00pm for 7.30pm display; £5 kids, £10 adults, £20 family

Skeleton Sundays (featured image)
Seeing as its just been Halloween and all, how about a trip to see a photography exhibition at the Booth Museum? Tim France is showcasing some incredible images of rare and unusual specimens from the museum’s extensive collection of skulls. The skull pictured looks supernatural, so we can’t wait to see what else he’s managed to capture as part of his Skeletal: The Scaffold of Life exhibition. It’s free entry (donations welcome!) and you get to look around the rest of the weird and wonderful Booth Museum while you’re at it.
Until Wednesday 23rd January 2019, daily 10am – 5pm; free
Booth Museum, 194 Dyke Rd, Brighton BN1 5AA

Top draw entertainment

If you like putting pen or (pencil) to paper, then don’t miss The Drawing Circus’ last outing this Sunday. They’ve been putting on incredible themed life-drawing classes for almost ten years now and have sadly decided to take a break after this final one. This month’s theme is ‘The Sleep of Reason’ and you can expect an afternoon of theatrical wonder as a host of costumed and naked models pose in still tableaux all over The Old Market, creating an imaginative story for the senses, all accompanied by live music from the, ahem, Drawchestra. They’ll provide easels, drawing boards and inspiration (although it is first come, first served), all you need is whatever you want to draw or paint with. Let the muse strike!
Sunday 4th November, doors 12.45pm, event 1pm – 8pm; students £15, adults £25
The Old Market, 11A Upper Market Street, Hove BN3 1AS
