what to do this weekend: 20th july – 22nd july

What another beaut of a week, cheers sunshine. And, it’s not over yet, with our pick of the week kicking the weekend off a little early tonight and the giant water slide landing in the city in just a couple of days. Things could get thundery come Friday, so we’ve discovered some of the best things to brighten up your weekend in Brighton and Hove. Here are our top BOTI picks…

weekend
D.I.S.C.YO(ga)
Silent Disco Yoga is back at Sea Lanes in Brighton to get their zen on.  They’re running two sessions so you’ll be able to soak up the views and absorb the energy of practising yoga outside. And where better than on the beach? They kick things off with an energising flow yoga class and then follow up with a beautiful 45-minute meditation practice at 7.30pm. Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation that promotes a deep sense of relaxation in the body and mind. If you’ve had a mad week, this could be the dreamiest of Friday nights. And don’t worry, you don’t have to know what you’re doing either, as it’s suitable for anyone, including kids, and they even suggest bringing a sleeping bag to wrap yourself up in as you lie back and chill. We might never leave…
Friday 20th July, 7.15pm; £10 / £4 for children under 12, £20 for both sessions; booking essential
Sea Lanes, 299 Madeira Drive, Brighton BN2 1EN

Trans Pride Brighton
Last week we told you about the amazing Prideful Pop-Up for Trans Pride, so we’re pretty excited that Trans Pride is happening this weekend. They’ve got a pretty packed line-up with fun kicking off on Thursday, which is when The Annual Brighton Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference will also be coming to Brighton University (The Salis Benney theatre), bringing people together to work towards making a more inclusive society. The official welcome party (Gal Pals Fundraiser, to be precise) will take place on Friday at Komedia from 11.00pm. If you want to join the Trans Pride March on Saturday, get yourself down to The Marlborough at 11.30am to get in the spirit before it leaves at midday. There’s so much going on, we can’t list it all, so check out their full listings and choose wisely!

They promise to set the tone for some me time with chilled out music, drinks and cake, and with all the materials provided, it’s the perfect excuse to get creative. And did we mention there’s cake?

The year of drawing
This weekend is the last chance to head to the Phoenix Gallery for the Year of Drawing exhibition. Creators Make Your Mark deliver and support a range of arts-based participatory learning opportunities and we’re big supporters of this. The wider programme aims to use arts to make a difference to individuals, groups and communities, integrating creativity into the fabric of healthcare and creating new possibilities for health and wellbeing within our communities. This exhibition celebrates a year-long site-specific project by Make Your Mark, which started in autumn 2017 and aims to increase access to the arts for people facing mental health challenges in Sussex and beyond. It does this through public drawing events at cultural venues, pop-up studios in NHS mental health settings, and a series of drawing-based Recovery College courses. It’s a brilliant project, so make sure you go and check out the creations while you can.
Until Sunday 22nd July, 11am – 5pm; free
Phoenix Gallery, 10–14 Waterloo Place, Brighton BN2 9NB
