glow wild in the woods

We were lucky enough to experience The Wonder Project when it came to Wakehurst in the summer, immersing ourselves in an interactive journey through the wild landscape and exploring stories of nature. And now they are back with the perfect winter woodland event, as the Glow Wild winter lantern trail gives us another excuse to get close to nature.

Back for its fifth year, the iconic trail will see Wakehurst Mansion, botanic garden and woodlands come alive with lanterns and fire installations over winter. The family-friendly event will see hundreds of lanterns light the Sussex space every Thursday to Sunday from 22nd November for four weeks, lighting up one of the most beautiful and significant botanic gardens in the country. Get your oooohs and aaaahs at the ready.

And who doesn’t want to see the tallest living Christmas tree in the UK in the run-up to the festive period? Yes, that’s at Wakehurst, too, if you want to start feeling festive. We are also big fans of the fact that a lot of the lanterns have been made by local school kids and volunteers, making it a proper community event.

The trail will be full of surprises, with an avenue of oaks housing glowing native owls to welcome you to the site. Giant willow figures will emerge from the shadowy waters of the Mansion Pond and the new Winter Garden will be brought alive with torches of fire. Make sure you take a look up at the Mansion, too, as a projection of a native wild flower meadow will transform it. The perfect adventure out of Brighton & Hove to discover some of wider Sussex’s beauty.
