We’re loving the community vibe in Brighton & Hove at the moment. It’s always there, but as the sun has started to shine and we’re on the countdown to our favourite festival month of the year, collaborating has become an even bigger thing. If you’re an artist or film-maker, here are some great projects that could give you the opportunity to get your work in front of the city.

After visiting Brighton for the first time over New Year, Lucy and Chris (aka Lucy & Yak) fell in love with our beautiful city (who could blame them?) and they’ve chosen to open their first bricks and mortar store right here. The dungarees-making duo have big pink plans for their store opening at the old Tidy Print site on Tidy Street and Gloucester Road. Don’t worry though, Jade and the Tidy Print team will be cracking on with their workshops while Lucy & Yak fill their shop front boots. Known for their independent, sustainable range of fashion, their dungarees have almost certainly made their way into a few Brighton-based wardrobes, as some of their range was stocked at Tidy Print previously. The shop opens this Friday 6th April from 10.00am, so pop in and give them a warm Brighton welcome. To celebrate their opening, they are inviting the artists of Brighton & Hove to design an open/closed sign for their shop window. The winner will receive a morning or afternoon shop with them and choose two items of their choice. Nice! Get in there quick though, as entries close at midnight on Wednesday 3rd April. Become part of The Family Store gallery
Just around the corner on Kensington Gardens, the team at The Family Store are bringing their Guest Walls back for the month of May. They will be bringing a pop-up exhibition to the family store gallery upstairs for four whole weeks and, guess what, they want you to be part of it. They’ve got three ace guest illustrators confirmed already (to be announced soon!) so they have one week left to fill. Are you an illustrator, artist or creative that has some beautiful creations to share? Well then, get your creations together and apply for this. There are no real rules as they are looking for an individual or collective, so if you want some free wall space to show off your work and potentially sell some, too, then send a one-page PDF proposal with examples of your work and what you’d do with the space to hello@familystoreuk.com. Cinecity film entries now open
Have you ever fancied seeing your work on the big screen? As Cinecity returns to Brighton in November, now could be your chance! They have three film categories that they are now taking submissions for and you’ve got until Friday 15th June to get them in. First up, if you’re under 25 then their ’emerging talent’ category is for you. They are in search of young local filmmakers from Brighton, Hove and Sussex to submit their short films (under 15 mins). For everyone else (over 25), Sussex filmmakers have a chance to submit their short films (under 45 mins) for their ‘Cinecity Open’ category. The final category in the filmmaking hat trick is ‘feature film’, where they are taking international film submissions (over 45 minutes) to be featured in their main programme. They are accepting shorts, features, documentaries, animation, artist moving image, you name it… perfect for the eclectic filmmakers we have here in Sussex. If you can’t wait for the wonderfully curated Cinecity later in the year, find out what they’ll be showing during the Brighton Festival next month.
