You may well have seen the Extinction Rebellion (XR) Bike Swarm around the city, slowing down traffic and grabbing people’s attention with brightly coloured rebel flags. Their next big plan is to take to the streets of London in October to continue to raise awareness of the reality of the climate change crisis we’re facing. As a launchpad for that event, Rebel Rising events are happening all over the country and this month it’s our turn, as Brighton will be hosting Rebel Rising South East on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September.
It’s a free event and they’ve got a pretty impressive line up of activities planned for the weekend, with the chance to get involved and volunteer on the day or help with the planning if you’ve got some time and skills to spare. On Saturday the event will be hosted at BHASVIC with a day filled with talks, fun workshops including drumming, t-shirt printing and banner making, as well as learning circles, training, live music and food throughout the day. It sounds like the perfect space to inspire people to gather and ‘Connect, Build, Plan, Celebrate’ and the day will run from 10.00am until 6.00pm, followed by a march or solidarity, if that’s what you’re into.
On Sunday, if you fancy joining the march then gather at Pavillion Gardens and New Road at 11.30am for bikes, drums, banners, flags, rebels and Caroline Lucas MP. Fun then kicks off at Concorde 2 at midday, with a killer music line-up including Asian Dub Foundation Sound System, Alice Russell, The Levellers’ Mark Chadwick, Dub Pistols DJ/MC and more still to be confirmed. Concorde 2 is a 14+ venue, so If you’ve got little ones then head to Sea Lanes as there will be a family zone there for mini rebels. There will be inspiring talks from Skeena Finebaum-Rathor, Vision coordinator of the Extinction Rebellion Movement and Dr Tom Sinclair, Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy at Wadham and author of the inspirational talk; Heading for Extinction. Clare Farrell, Peter Kyle MP and JoJo Mehta are on the line-up too. Rebels, unite! (But make sure you register, first…)
